Juneteenth: A Rich History in Bastrop
Juneteenth, observed on June 19, 1865, marks the day enslaved people in Texas learned of their freedom, symbolizing both the end of slavery and the resilience of African American communities. In Bastrop, this pivotal moment is honored by the Bastrop Juneteenth Committee, established in 1986. This community-driven organization promotes social change and educates others about Black history and culture. Each year, Bastrop’s Juneteenth celebration unites the community with family reunions, a festive parade, street dances, and a vibrant festival that showcases the rich traditions of African American heritage, fostering unity for future generations.
